Book Review: Show Your Work
What is it about?
"Show Your Work! 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered" by Austin Kleon is your key to embracing the creative person within you. It shows that you don't need to be a genius to share what you create or put yourself out there in the world. Through 10 simple ways, it will enable your journey of getting noticed and finding your own voice.
Why it appealed to me?
This book deeply resonated with me because it coincided with a pivotal moment in my life. I had just launched my own website (the one where you are reading this blog), where I share personal experiences and tutorials. However, I found myself at a stage where I had a lot of ideas in my mind but felt a bit vulnerable to be able to put them out there. I questioned whether my content would be valuable, if it was too simplistic, or if anyone would even be interested in it.
Then, I stumbled upon "Show Your Work!" and it instantly clicked with me. I literally completed this book within 4 days and something within me changed after reading it. It was as if Kleon's insights and anecdotes spoke directly to my fears and uncertainties. I had so many wow moments in the book. ✨
Many ideas from the book really resonated with me, and I'd like to share a few that I found especially valuable.
''We're all terrified of being revealed as amateurs, but in fact, today it is the amateur - the enthusiast who pursues her work in the spirit of love."
It's natural to feel a bit apprehensive or even embarrassed when starting something new. We worry about being seen as amateurs, as if that's a bad thing. But Kleon flips that notion on its head, suggesting that amateurs are enthusiasts who pursue their work out of sheer love and passion—hold a special power.
Think about it this way: Imagine you're trying to learn how to paint, write, or play a musical instrument. At first, you might feel clumsy or unsure of yourself. You might worry that your efforts won't be good enough, that others will judge you. But here's the thing—every master was once a beginner. Every expert started off as an amateur.
The beauty of being an amateur is that you're driven by love and curiosity rather than pressure or expectation. You're free to experiment, to make mistakes, and to learn from them. And as Kleon points out, even the simplest, most seemingly "stupid" creative act still counts. Every brushstroke, every word written, every note played—they all contribute to your growth as a creator.
This beautifully written quote gave me the confidence to embrace my journey as a beginner and to share my work authentically, without fear of judgment.
Here's another one,
"You can't find your voice if you don't use it. Talk about the things you love. Your voice will follow."
Imagine you have a favourite hobby or topic that you absolutely love talking about. Maybe it's photography, cooking, or even astronomy. When you talk about these things, your unique voice shines through. It's like your personality comes alive, and people can't help but be drawn to your enthusiasm. Now, imagine if you never shared these interests with anyone. If you kept them all to yourself, your voice would stay hidden, and no one would know about the things that make you light up inside.
In today's digital age, the internet is like a giant megaphone that amplifies your voice to reach people all over the world. If you want others to know about your passions, your hobbies, and the things that matter to you, the things you do then you have to share them online. Whether it's through social media, a blog, or a YouTube channel, the internet gives you the opportunity to have your say and connect with like-minded individuals.
But here's the thing: if you don't put your work out there, it's as if it doesn't exist. It's like having a treasure chest full of amazing ideas and creations but keeping it locked away where no one can see it. By sharing your work online, you give it life. You allow others to discover it, engage with it, and maybe even be inspired by it.
The last quote I would like to share from the book that needs no explanation:
"Carving out a space for yourself online, somewhere where you can express yourself and share your work, is still one of the best possible investments you can make with your time." - Andy Baio
And I couldn't agree more! 🙂
Should you read it?
I believe this book is essential for anyone who desires to share their passions with the world but finds themselves held back by self-doubt or procrastination. "Show Your Work" offers invaluable guidance and inspiration. It emphasises focussing on process rather than product. It motivates you to find fulfilment in the act of sharing and collaborating. So, if you're ready to embrace vulnerability, cultivate connections, and unleash your creativity in meaningful ways, then this book is a must-read.
