Book Review: The Light We Carry
What is it about?
'The Light We Carry, Overcoming in Uncertain Times' is a book by Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the USA. In this book, she has shared her countless experiences as a woman of colour, daughter, wife, mother, and First Lady and how she maintained her sense of purpose and positivity through it all. Overall, this book is packed with pearls of wisdom that can help us all lead a much fuller and kinder life.
Why it appealed to me?
I think as we grow up, we tend to become too hard on ourselves. We become more conscious of our looks, of how we are being perceived, of how we are behaving. We end up judging and scrutinising ourselves way too much. We forget to view ourselves with a lens of kindness. In this book, Michelle Obama addresses these very human tendencies and shares her honest reflections and practical advice that serve as a gentle reminder to treat ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer to a dear friend.
Life throws plenty of responsibilities on our shoulders and challenges us in ways we don't want to be challenged. These responsibilities can seem overwhelming, often leaving us feeling like we're constantly juggling difficult choices. I loved the way Michelle Obama wisely puts it, “Success involves making many difficult choices and drawing the lines that go with them, trusting that your progress will pay dividends over time, if only you can keep yourself on track. You just need to keep telling yourself: Not long.” This is a reminder that perseverance through tough decisions is key, and that the progress we make, no matter how slow, will eventually lead to success.
Another key message that really struck a chord with me is when she emphasizes the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones and taking risks. She says, “In trying to spare yourself the worry and discomfort of taking a risk, you're potentially costing yourself an opportunity. In clinging only to what you know, you are making your world small. You are robbing yourself of chances to grow.” I cannot vouch for this more. Having taken some risks myself and leaving my comfort zone altogether, I can second the fact that to grow, you need to push your boundaries and be open to the opportunities around you.
Should you read it?
I would 100% recommend reading this book. It’s a beautifully written, thoughtful, and motivating book that will leave you feeling inspired to embrace your own light and share it generously with the world.
It is particularly powerful because it addresses universal themes with a personal touch, making Michelle's reflections feel like a conversation with a wise, trusted friend. Her candidness is what touched me the most, and I am sure it is what makes everyone feel so connected to her despite her role as the First Lady. The way she articulates the simple things in life—her relationship with Barack Obama, her insecurities and worries as a mother, and her anxiety about being perceived differently—is what makes this book so special.
I loved the way she explained the meaning of 'Go High'. In her words, "Going high is about learning to keep the poison out and the power in." This means it is important to keep your calm in situations that cause you angst and make you feel triggered. Acting civilized in a situation does not mean you are not bothered by it, but rather that you have control over yourself. You know how to process those emotions and do something better with them—to respond rather than react.
Overall, this book is a guide for navigating life's complexities with grace and resilience. Her insights are not just theoretical; they are grounded in her own experiences and delivered with a warmth that makes the reader feel seen and understood.
So whether you're seeking practical advice, personal inspiration, or simply a heartfelt narrative, this book has something for everyone. It’s a testament to the power of inner strength and the importance of community, reminding us all that we carry a light within us that is worth nurturing and sharing.
